What is cooperative housing?

There are many types, we are the not-for-profit kind. We own the the property in common, not individually.
Are there many restrictions?

No but The Cedars is a 55 years old plus community I.E. All registered members must be 55 years or older at time of acceptance.
What does it cost to live here?

There is a Share price of $143,000 to $149,000 depending on the size of the unit. This fee is returned, less any repairs that are needed, at the time of move out.

In addition there is a monthly maintenance fee which is set each year and approved by the members.

All registered members pay for their own hydro and a modest property tax which is reduced thanks to the BC Homeowners Grant.
Can I have a pet?

Yes but the number and size are regulated.
What type of housing is offered? -

The 84 Units are arranged in pods of 4. Each has a carport. Units are either 1 bedroom and den or 2 bedroom.
Is The Cedars an apartment style co-op?

No. The Cedars Housing Cooperative units are all ranch style, one floor, no stairs. We are set on 7.5 acres of beautifully and professionally landscaped open space.
Do I have to volunteer my services?

Yes, it is expected that all registered members contribute their time and talents. There are many ways to be involved, committees such as maintenance, finance, social, housing selection, and many other areas.
What makes The Cedars a great place to live?

The answer depends on who you ask. Cooperative living is all about building a sense of a community.

Scores of fun events are held here. Potluck dinners, breakfast, holiday events, dances with our own in-house band, white elephant sales, Board involvement and much more!

Can I renovate my unit?
Yes, with certain conditions applied. The Housing Committee will provide more details.
Is there a means test for residency?
No, we do not require income verification.
How do I apply and is there a waiting list?

There is a multi step process. But it all starts with requesting an application form and returning it to the Housing committee.
